Massive Ego '2004
It's
with great sadness we have to report that our fantastic gorgeous friend and fellow band member Steady Eddie passed away on Monday, it's news we’ve received today that we can still hardly believe and speaking for the band, myself and Olly, and everyone who knew him, were absolutely gutted and left feeling numb and empty and at a loss. Our rock 'n' roll sister who we loved dearly isn’t with us anymore.
I am here writing this now, not really knowing what to say, feeling so fucking sad and shocked, but feeling I must share this with you guys, who have maybe
followed us as a band, or know us personally, our friends.
The last email I got from Steady only a few days ago, asked whether I’d put his new pictures on this site, the ones he'd been working on Photoshop, that's why I'm on here now, I had to see his last pictures and put them on here as he asked me to, his last art work, the images & look that Steady was so fucking famous for, and so fucking good at...Move over Pete Burns, who once said in that song...'watch out here I come', that was Steady to a tee, and I’m sure he wouldn't mind
me comparing him to that song lyric being an Old Miss Burn's fan like we both were.
Why, is a word that keeps coming into my head right now? Why fuckin' why...we were only all together last week doing a gig at Donald's 'Beautiful Bend' night at the ICA, our first gig in a long time as Steady had been away with his boyfriend Mark for over 4 months, travelling around India, Australia and America, and we were so happy to have him back in the fold, with his 'look' on, hand held guitar synth over his shoulder, and strutting his high heels on stage with us...he was back with me and Olly, doing what we loved 'Scaring the kids' as we used to put it, except it wasn't, it was a gig in front of our contempories, our mates, even ex band member Deana-Lina looking' as fierce as ever, and people who used to go to the legendary night that was 'Beautiful Bend' a club that was sooooo Steady. People dressing up, too much make-up, too much vodka, trashy pop tunes, and lots of falling around on the dance floor.
Steady was an integral part of Massive Ego, and has been for the last 6 years, always front of stage, synths in hand, and ready to PARTY, with a 'look' that was so special, and original, and so us. He was a major contributor to the sound and style of the band, co-producing, re-mixing, laying down the odd guitar solo over a frenzied synth line, for us 'freak' was a way of life and not just a 'look', that's what the band has always been about, and hence why we’ve probably never crossed over to chart success, nor would we want to.
Steady and the rest of us were really looking forward to this years 'summer gay festivals' he loved the 'Gayfest' Manchester Mardi Gras shows that we’ve done religiously for the last 4 years, a chance to get out of London, dress to the neighs, and get up on stage in-front of 20,000 people, and drinking lot's of free vodka! we partied hard at these events. With Steady's backstage after party antics becoming legendary, with the comment 'ooooh very Massive Ego’ whether we can pull it off this year without Steady, or even try is yet to be thought about. At this point in time I just feel like a huge part of me has been yanked out. The Massive has been taken out of the Ego.
Not many people knew Steady's real name...Peter became Steady, and then not so long ago Steady became Eddie (Orange Dasher to give him the full title), after years of people shouting Steady Eddie...even before his connection with this band, Steady was a legend with his own bands 'Elisabeth Bunny', & 'Sweetie' his
collaborations with punk poet Sexton Ming, and member of 'Minty'. He formed 'As If' with best mate Trixi around the same time he was working with us, coming up with such genius tracks as 'Chip Pan Fire' and 'God Save The Queens' two tunes that will for ever be in my DJ box. Steady we can't believe you've gone, we love you dearly, & your star will be fucking shining bright with us for ever, but were glad we got to spend the last few nights with you, doing what we do best, performing, dressing up, partying, and that we’ve been on this journey together, it wouldn't have been so colourful and fun without you...you better have got the fucking vodka in for us mate when we get there.
Love and miss you
Marc xxx
